Description :

A Christian law student writing whimsically about travel expeditions and life observations, graphic design and unnecessary trivia.

It's a must-read.

DAY 109 - Cojonudo

.

Welcome readers. Lately, I have not had the chance to do much of this:

.
DAY 109 - Cojonudo

This is largely because I have to do much of this:

.
DAY 109 - Cojonudo

It's hard to cope with it all, but to help me get by I've been reading a lot of this:

.
DAY 109 - Cojonudo

And celebrating those words at a place like this:

.
DAY 109 - Cojonudo

So overall, I feel like this.

DAY 100 - Cien Días

.

Well, I've been in Europe for 100 days now. Which means there is no way on earth that I could NOT post this song. It's called 100 Days, 100 Nights, by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and I require you to listen to it while you read this article. Go. Click there now. Stop reading. I said click it.

That's better.

So, finally, finally I can say with a pretty assured that confidence that I have adjusted to life here. I am at last a fully installed Madrileño - come visit me here and I'll show you around some of the trendy pockets of town, hidden away in backstreets (and flouted openly in certain plazas) of Malasaña, Chueca, La Latina, Tirso de Molina, and Lavapiés. The last of these is where I have been living now for three days, and I could speak worlds to you about how immensely my standard of living has improved since the change. First, the apartment itself is just better:

DAY 100 - Cien Días

DAY 100 - Cien Días

DAY 100 - Cien Días

DAY 100 - Cien Días

DAY 100 - Cien Días

I know what you're thinking. Did you make the delicious looking Big Breakfast, Dan? The answer is yes I did, only a few short hours ago.

Secondly, the area is just nicer:

DAY 100 - Cien Días

It's hard to pinpoint exactly why I like Lavapiés so much. Technically speaking it's still a ghetto, just like Getafe, being a concentrated point of residence for a large number of Arabs and Indians. But while in Getafe that just meant I was more likely to be brutally mauled to death on the street, here it means the Indian food is really tasty. There is something about this area that's just unmistakeably cool: as Séverine hates me saying, I'll elaborate on this later.

And finally, my new flatmates, Maria and Javi, are salt of the earth. We eat together daily in the cosy little loungeroom, we joke about each other's countries over vino tinto, and we actually get along.

And so it is with great confidence that I can now finally say: I live here.

DAY 87 - La Boda

DAY 87 - La Boda.

I have been AWOL, as uni work back here in Madrid takes on a whole new level. Things are happening quickly and I'm having to buckle down for the first time since arriving her. Also, I gave Lilia and Ghenadie my two weeks notice that I'm moving out. I want to live in an area where people don't go to sleep at 8pm and I can step outside the house and be in a nice café within thirty seconds. Plan in action presently.

But just so there is no doubt: my weekend in Sydney was absolutely incredible. A social adrenaline shot that I sorely needed. I love my friends, and I LOVE my family.

DAY 77 - La Patria

DAY 77 - La Patria.

In London, Soho. With a latté. An exceptionally well-crafted latté. My second one in this café. There are Elvis Presley posters on the wall, as well as drawings done by 5-year-olds on scrap paper and a pair of pink shorts hanging from a hook, inexplicably. I know a healthy majority of the tracks playing on the sound system, and have loved most of them intensely at various points in my life. The barista speaks English. The waitress speaks English. The couple who just ran into the café and stole a bottle of tomato sauce right in front of me for no discernible reason, probably spoke English. I speak English.

I feel completely in my element, maybe for the first time in months. It's a nice fleeting moment of foreign familiarity. Off to Taipei in about five hours, though, to rediscover all the *love* I have for that *airport*. Cheerio!

I still have no idea what those tomato sauce stealers were on about.

DAY 74 - Descansa Necesaria

DAY 74 - Descansa Necesaria.

Sorry kids. Got a little side-tracked there, and let's not kid around - side-tracked is a euphemism for lazy. But mere mortals need their rest, and I have most assuredly gotten mine now.

Plenty of developments this week, so I think I'll set them loose at appropriate times. For now, instead of discussing how I've finally triumphed over Spain's complicated banking system, or how I'll be interviewing the crowd favourite to be the next president of Mali next week, or how for the first time in my life I donned pink rubber gloves today and scrubbed clean every surface of the bathroom from top to bottom, I'd like to instead proudly announce that I have finally purchased a record player over here. I'm back in business baby, and boy have there been some records I've been dying to buy these past two months. Jason, the list is on its way.

I bought the sound system second-hand, and besides one of the most extensive collection of cassette mixtapes I've ever seen that was left waiting for me in the bottom cupboard (yes, I do plan on listening to these), I was also entrusted with a rare gem of Spanish 80s pop on vinyl, entitled "A Mis Amigos" by José Luis Perales. To be honest the musicality itself was bearable, in that every upbeat Latin serenade on the album sounds exactly like every other upbeat Latin serenade ever written; but the lyrics actually made me feel nauseous.

This is taken from Track 4 on the B-side, " Te Quiero Tanto" - "I love you so much".

Te quiero tal y como eres
Con todos tus defectos
Con todas esas dudas sobre mi
Te quiero como nadie te ha querido
Te quiero como el niño que hay en mi

which translates to:

I love you how you are
With all of your defects
With all the doubts I have about you
I love you like no-one loves you
I love you like the child that there is in me.

Timeless.

DAY 65 and 66 - El Trabajo El Más Increíble De Todos Los Tiempos

DAY 65 and 66 - El Trabajo El Más Increíble De Todos Los Tiempos.

Must be succinct today as I'm in the middle of preparing a report in Spanish for Social Anthropology. This is one of the many procrastination strategies I have employed so far.

I just wanted to let you all know that I landed the most incredible job this week. After a month of trying to work for World Investment News through their normal application process, I tried a cold call this week to make an appointment with the manager of the division I wanted to work for, the Africa eBiz Review. And somehow, baffingly, I got the interview, impressed the interviewer, and got a call back the next day, saying I could start tomorrow (which was Thursday). To be clear, all I'm doing at the moment is volunteering (someone else had already snatched up the paid internship), but I am determined to make myself indispensable in the company. At the moment I'm there one full day and two half days a week, but I'll also be doing a lot of work at home.

Why bother, you might ask? It's an incredible opportunity is why. The office is overrun by polyglots, so you need to be able to switch between French, Spanish and English with relative ease. It's an international investment newspaper with offices all around Africa. On my first day there I wrote two reports on Sudan's Agriculture and Energy sectors respectively, and then drafted a letter to the President of Liberia, Her Excellency Mrs Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. I mean, if that's what they're tossing me on my first day on the job, who knows what's in store down the track?

Oh, and it finally rained tonight. The first proper storm I've seen in two months. Glorious, thundering, road-to-river downpour. The best.
